PCCA 2022 Mid-Year Meeting

2022 MID-YEAR MEETING Meritage Resort and Spa, Napa, California September 14 - 17, 2022 Industry Education • Premium Networking • Great Times!

The bustling city of Napa, on the banks of the Napa River, has undergone a tremendous reinvention. Not so long ago, the town was a sleepy residential area with strip-mall-style shopping centers. But an influx of celebrity-chef restaurants, upscale lodgings, manicured parks and river walks, and dozens of tasting rooms have redefined the area as a luxury destination. While world-class wineries may be the main draw, and for good reason, Napa wins hearts with its beautiful scenery, globally recognized restaurants, unique shopping boutiques, arts and culture, spas, and outdoor activities. Foodies rejoice! The restaurant scene in Downtown Napa is a feast for all your senses. Highlights include Oxbow Public Market, a lively food hall where you can slurp fresh oysters at Hog Island, savor artisanal charcuterie from Fatted Calf, or indulge in truffles and caramels from Anette’s Chocolates. Craving world-class pizza? Pick up an organic wood-fired pie from Ca’ Momi, which has been certified by the Vera Pizza Napoletana. Treat yourself to sushi at nearby Morimoto Napa, dine on chef Ken Frank’s elegant offerings at the Michelinstarred La Toque, or discover the spectacular local-ingredient-driven cuisine on the Napa riverfront at Celadon. As a cultural center of California wine country, Napa provides plenty of opportunities to taste. Highlights include Vintner’s Collective, housed in the city’s oldest stone building, Mark Herold Wines, an eclectic spot with funky decor, and Prime Cellars, an intimate experience, focusing on small production wines. For a relaxing afternoon, head to St. Clair Brown, a boutique winery, beer garden, and restaurant that overlooks the path of the beloved Napa Valley Wine Train. Around the Valley Napa Valley boasts more than 400 wineries and is famous for its prized Cabernet Sauvignon. Stroll through the vineyards, talk with the winemaker, or sip award-winning wines with dramatic views of the valley floor. You will discover food & wine experiences that go beyond the norm. Towns of Napa Valley. While only 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, Napa Valley is home to numerous towns that each bring their own unique flair to the region. Yountville is a culinary delight, featuring Bouchon Bakery and the Michelin-starred The French Laundry. Heading up valley, Oakville and Rutherford are situated in “Cabernet Country,” with longstanding wineries such as Grgich Hills and Robert Mondavi Winery. Further north is St. Helena, where tasting rooms, stylish shops, galleries, and restaurants abound. St. Helena is home to many famous names in wine, such as Beringer Vineyards, Louis M. Martini Winery, and Charles Krug. The valley’s northernmost town of Calistoga offers soothing mineral pools, mud baths, and restorative spas with a healthy dose of laid-back luxury. Napa Valley State & City Parks. You’ll want to explore the many green spaces of the area that provide the perfect opportunity to picnic, hike, or just take in the history and lush landscape. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park is home to rare, impressive clutches of coast redwoods and offers year-round camping, picnicking, hiking, and seasonal swimming in a spring-fed pool. Bale Grist Mill Historic Park, a fascinating example of 1846 ingenuity, where millers used (and still use) water-wheel-powered pulleys and grinding stones to craft artisanal organic flours, cornmeal, and polenta. The city-run Alston Park has 3 miles of meandering creek and wildflower-lined trails for bikers and hikers. Shopping. Shopping in the Napa Valley has it all: fine art, fashion, jewelry, wine, gourmet food, sweets, cookware, and more at locally owned boutiques, markets, and outlets. The city of Napa has plenty of places to shop: downtown Napa, First Street, Oxbow Public Market, Napa Premium Outlets, and the Napa Valley Welcome Center. In Yountville, you’ll find The Marketplace, as well as several boutique shops and galleries. St. Helena’s charming main street is known for some of the best shopping and strolling around. At the north end, you’ll find plenty of boutique shops on Calistoga’s main drag, Lincoln Avenue. Galleries. Napa Valley also nurtures a sophisticated cultural scene, with art galleries housed in the vineyards that nestle high up on the hillside. Art lovers can accompany a gallery tour with a glass of wine, or else they can head to the independent galleries of the small towns, which showcase an impressive range of local and international talent from contemporary artists. Look for the Art Gallery Napa Valley, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, Gordon Huether Studio & Gallery, Jessel Gallery, and Nancy Willis Studio. Explore NAPA Valley

Ross’ program is all about the DNA of what makes champions in sports so unique and how that relates to business. It’s based on a series of books he wrote in which he interviewed more than 1,000 professional athletes and coaches that all had one thing in common: they were all members of championship teams. In his research, he concluded that the same metrics and characteristics that were common among champions in sports were also common among peak performers in business. There are reasons certain teams win consistently, whereas others don’t. Ross explains why. It’s based largely on the “Good to Great” concept of how the best companies are able to separate themselves from the rest of the pack through servant leadership and by creating a culture of excellence, developing deeper relationships, and giving extraordinary customer service. Ross weaves sports stories about the DNA of champions along with stories of companies he has worked with around the world, and he shares bestpractice ideas on ways to overcome disruption while ultimately building stronger relationships. At the core of his message is the simple fact that we like to do business with people who we trust, who we like, and who just “get it” — CHAMPIONS. 10:30 - 11:45 am Dr. Christopher Ali Farm Fresh Broadband The Politics of Rural Connectivity Dr. Christopher Ali is an Associate Professor in Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia. His research interests include communication policy and regulation, rural broadband, critical political economy, critical geography, comparative media systems, media localism, and local news. Christopher’s current research focuses on broadband policy and deployment in the United States, specifically in rural areas. His book, Farm Fresh Broadband: The Politics of Rural Connectivity (MIT Press, 2021), examines the complicated terrain of rural broadband policy in the U.S. Farm Fresh unpacks the politics of broadband policy, asking why millions of rural Americans lack broadband access and why the federal government, and large providers, are not doing more to connect the unconnected. Christopher has been published in numerous internationally ranked academic journals including Communication Theory, Media Culture & Society, and Telecommunications Policy. His most recent article, which examines the failure of broadband policy at the Federal Communications Commission, was published in the International Journal of Communication in 2020. In April 2021, Christopher testified before the Senate Commerce Committee on a hearing about federal broadband policies.
